Assignment
Your prompt is 'Tiny Town'
This will be a multi-week project to reinforce compositing workflows and the advantages of working in non dstrictive & motion/animation forward ways.
- We will begin with a 6" by 6" illustration at a pixel resolution/size of AT LEAST 1800 x 1800 pixels per inch (PPI).
- Adding bleed to your digital illustration is up to you, I shared a few ways that you can accomplish this in class this week 😉.
Your assigment is illustrate a bustling city or town, it can be a real or fictional location. With lots of people or buildings or traffic or trains or bubbles or turtles or kittens or flying machines (hopefully you get the point here).
- The catch is that I dont want you to draw a lot of buildings or kittens, I only want you to make one or two of each!
- We will color, duplicate and compose these items leveraging some core concepts of digital workflows.
And since our class discussion time last week was shorter, I want you to focus on making the basic parts and general direction for class next Monday.
Here is an example: Let's imagine that your illustration is a fantastical future NYC:
- Illustration one might be the background/scene: sunset sky, silhouetted building skyline.
- Illustration two might be some taxi cabs, you illustratie one or two taxi cabs, later we will duplicate those and create as many as we need.
- Illustration three might be a few buildings, not all the buildings, just a few (one or two) that we can color, and or scale or recompose to make a whole street of buildings.
- Illustration four might be a subway car or two.
- Illustration five might be some people.
- And so on...
Deliverables for class next week
- A rough sketch of your illustration/composition. Scanned or digitally drawn.
- Draw at least 4 or 5 different types of items (buildings, kittens, etc) for your cityscape and 1 background/scene.
- I expect at least half of your items to be drawn on paper and scanned, the rest can be digital (Procreate, Photoshop and or Fresco) if you wish to do so.
- Create a Psd file containing all of your elements, prep the scans for coloring.
- You can start coloring thisgs if you want but it's not required, yet.
- 6" by 6" illustration at a pixel resolution/size of AT LEAST 1800 x 1800, with bleed if you want it.
We will spend time in class next week talking and exploring different ways of buildingf this composition.
Bring and/or upload for class next week
- One LAYERED prepped Photoshop file and
- Any related working files, scans, etc... mentioned above
- The Google Drive directory for this weeks project is: svaMFAI_20251013-assignment-tiny-town-sketch-and-parts-prep
