Assignment
- This week, the subject of your digital illustration composition is "tiny town".
- Your assignment is to create one new drawn, colored, and composited editorial illustration of a busy little land and then animate a version of it within Photoshop.
- You have two deliverables, the 5"x 5" illustration and an animated version.
Use the techniques introduced & reinforced in class to create one composited colored illustration.
- You will upload two Photoshop files, and one animating gif/video plus any related scans/parts or pieces for class next week.
- You are allowed to draw using traditional methods (paper, scan, prepare in Photoshop) or draw digitally on your iPad Pro using Adobe Fresco and polish/color/composite in Photoshop.
Your still illustration assignment should include at least 4 or 5 foreground items and 1 background, then use multiple copies of the same items to create a story. Your animating file should be at least 10 seconds long.
Process for 5" x 5" file
- Draw no less than 5 separate parts/pieces which will be assembled into one composition.
- At least one part/piece should be a "background"
- Scan and prep each part/piece as independent grouped items or Smart Objects.
- Bring all the parts/pieces that you wish to use into one file, compose an illustration.
- You can scale, rotate, recolor, duplicate your parts/pieces, you can use any variation or Photoshop techniques you wish.
- You should be using groups and or Smart Objects within Photoshop.
- You should be using at least ONE layer or clipping mask in your process.
Process for animating file
- Make a copy of your file above and scale it down to a manageable side for illustration:
- If you have a fast computer and want to make a HD video you can try: 1,920 x 1,080 pixels
- If you want to make an animated gif you should use 800 x 800 or 600 x 600 pixels
- Create a file with at least 10 seconds of animation or several files that add up to 10 seconds of animation.
- Use the Timeline panel (video animation or frame animation mode) to create your animation.
Upload for class next week
- One LAYERED photoshop file of your print resolution illustration.
- One LAYERED photoshop file of your animating masterpiece.
- Video or animated gif exported file.
- Any related parts, pieces, or scans.
- Compositions should be 5"x 5"
- I would suggest scanning at 1200 ppi (if you scan), then working at 600 ppi & coloring that.
